WHAT ARE ROCK MATTRESSES AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Rock mattresses - also known as gabion mattresses - are flexible, heavy-duty wire mesh baskets filled with stone. Engineered for erosion control, riverbank protection, scour prevention and slope stabilisation, rock mattresses provide a stable yet permeable layer that conforms to the natural terrain.
Their low profile and flexibility make them ideal for areas requiring both structural performance and environmental compatibility. The structure is divided into cells to prevent displacement and enhance stability once filled with rock. Rock mattresses are laid out in interconnected panels and filled with angular rock. Once installed, the mattress conforms to the ground’s shape, allowing water to flow through while protecting the underlying soil. FUNCTIONS
Erosion & Sediment Control
The use of a geosynthetic to prevent soil or other particle movements on the surface slope. Acts to reduce soil erosion caused by wind forces, rainfall impact and surface water runoff. Stabilisation
Improvement of the mechanical behaviour of an unbound granular material by including one or more geosynthetic layers such that deformation under applied loads is reduced by minimising movement of the unbound granular material. Stabilisation geosynthetics are predominantly applicable to the improved performance of bases and subbases of trafficked areas such as roadways, railways, airfields, and working platforms.
